Four Weeks as Three

It’s been four weeks since E arrived. Four weeks of chaos, love, sleeplessness and the discovery of who we all are as a family. It’s been so exciting to see how much she’s changed in these past four weeks but also so sad that she’s already growing up so much!

It’s been four weeks since we had to start putting someone else’s “schedule” ahead of our own. It’s never taken us so long to get ready to leave the house as it has these past four weeks and the car rides have never been so loud (E isn’t the biggest fan of her car seat!).

I’ve never been more tired in my entire life. My mom said if I survived college I can survive this. I have never been the type of student who would stay up all night or late to finish something, I’d wake up early. I’ve never been one to nap either so this adjustment is rocking my world. Lately, E and I have been taking a nap together on the couch in the mornings.

Three Weeks Young

This week E met her maternal grandma for the first time!

We spent the week relaxing as a family. The bonus to having my mom here is she’s done almost all the non baby care related things needed around the house (cooking, cleaning, laundry, feeding us!) so I’ve been able to completely spoil baby girl.

The First Two Weeks

We’ve been a family of three humans for a few weeks now. Its been crazy, exhausting and terribly rewarding!

The First 48 Hours

E came to us bright-eyed and calm as a cucumber. From the minute she could open her eyes she was a keen observer of what was going on around her. She was like that for the whole first day.

My brother came to meet her while we were still in Labor and Delivery and she was still alert. He accompanied us to our room in the Family Birth Center and stayed with us for an hour or two there. While we were visiting, she dozed off.

Shortly after waking that afternoon, she got her first bath from Nurse Maggie. Her long brown hair was washed and she smelled even more like heaven on earth! I knew she’d come out with hair but didn’t know she’d have quite so much!

And Then There Were Three

Baby E joined our family June 28, 2016 wide-eyed, alert and with a full head of hair.

Brand new baby!

We’d been trying to bring her into the world for several weeks. With my diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes and our desire to deliver at The Birthing Inn, we had several time limits that necessitated she be born on or before 40 weeks (June 25).

When we went for our 39 week appointment we were in crunch time. E needed to be born in 72 hours…or less but she was making no indications that she was headed that way. After lengthy discussion and debate, we decided to try a natural, castor oil induction. This entailed:

  1. Eating a large, protein rich breakfast
  2. Drinking a castor oil milkshake (sounds WAY worse than it actually was…the first 2 times)
  3. Using the breast pump for 10 minutes
  4. Taking a 45-minute walk
  5. Resting for 4 or more hours
